Founded in 2009, Tokopedia, a technology company, aims to democratise commerce through technology by connecting businesses with consumers in Indonesia. With over 270 million people spread across 17,000 islands, creating equal access to products and services in Indonesia is a challenge. Growth opportunities are often only available for people living in larger cities with access to better technology and infrastructure, which in turn contributes to welfare inequality throughout the country. Prior to Tokopedia’s arrival, consumers were paying different prices for the same goods depending on where they lived, while budding entrepreneurs in smaller cities had to overcome higher capital barriers to get their businesses off the ground and gain access to broader markets. Tokopedia’s marketplace addresses this inequality by building bridges between merchants and buyers. Since we started operating, we have connected millions of users with goods and services and helped millions of merchants across Indonesia to grow their businesses online. Over the years, Tokopedia has become a force for digital transformation in the country.
