Indonesia, 14 December 2022 – Tokopedia, part of the GoTo Group, recently launched the ‘Tokopedia Hijau’ movement in an effort to build a long-term sustainable business ecosystem that will benefit the environment and all strategic partners.
“We genuinely appreciate Tokopedia for launching its Tokopedia Hijau movement, which seeks to establish a more efficient and waste-free marketplace ecosystem. This is in line with the Indonesian Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs’ priority program of supporting the growth of environmentally responsible MSMEs. Based on the findings of a 2021 study we conducted with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), 95% of 3,000 MSMEs expressed their interest in adopting environmentally friendly business practices,” remarked Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs of the Republic of Indonesia, Teten Masduki.
Public Affairs Senior Lead Tokopedia, Aditia Grasio Nelwan explained, “Tokopedia currently has over 12 million sellers, nearly all of them are MSMEs. Tokopedia Hijau encourages as many sellers as possible to implement environmentally friendly principles in order to collectively establish sustainable businesses as well as contribute to society and the environment through various programs, such as the Green Seller Education Program and Incubation.
Green Seller Education and Incubation Program Supports MSMEs in Building Environmentally Friendly Businesses
Tokopedia Hijau has a number of programs available, among them the Green Seller Education Program. The program offers comprehensive modules and webinars to sellers at no additional cost to help them kickstart and grow into a more environmentally friendly business.
The Green Seller Education Program is one of the several programs offered by Tokopedia Hijau, which consists of a series of initiatives to further empower green sellers, such as intensive classes and online campaigns. Social enterprise The Local Enablers aided the program in focusing on sellers of eco-friendly products and packaging, as well as long-term enterprises with social and environmental impacts.
Founder of The Local Enabler, Dr. Dwi Indra Purnomo, commented, “In Tokopedia’s Green Seller Incubation Program, we act as a facilitator in exchanging insights and best practices regarding the implementation of environmentally friendly principles for MSMEs.” On the other hand, Tokopedia has provided IDR 100 million worth of coaching grants to the program’s top three green sellers.
Tokopedia Encourages Communities to Use Eco-Friendly Products
Environmentally friendly businesses continue to have tremendous potential. According to Tokopedia data from the previous year, the regions with the highest number of searches for environmentally friendly products were Jabodetabek, Bandung, and Surabaya. There was also a nearly 1.5-fold increase in market sales of recycled products. Sales of reusable folding bags went up around 2.5 times as well.
TISOO is an example of an environmentally friendly product business – notably bamboo tissue with plastic-free packaging – that has recently joined Tokopedia Hijau. “TISOO was founded in 2021 to help tackle natural forest deforestation. We are committed to planting one mangrove tree for every TISOO product purchased. Through Tokopedia, our revenue can reach tens of millions of rupiahs,” said TISOO Owner, Stephannie Thian.
Another company that has joined Tokopedia Hijau is KaIND. “KaIND utilizes eri silkworm breeding to create fashion items, such as eco-friendly scarves and pouches, in partnership with more than 200 farmers in Pasuruan. The production process is done ethically – without harming the eri silkworms as well as using natural dyes and adhering to zero waste principles,” explained Melie.
In support of ‘GoTo’s 2030 Zero Waste Mission’, Tokopedia Hijau encourages Indonesian communities to actively contribute to the environment. Customers who shop through Tokopedia Hijau can help reduce post-consumption waste as the products are shipped in a more environmentally friendly packaging, such as paper wrap, shredded paper, pineapple fiber, and other alternatives.
In addition, Tokopedia will plant one tree seedling for every user transaction conducted between 10-17 December 2022 as a way of supporting environmental conservation efforts.
