LPEM FEB UI: Survey finds equal or higher consumer spending on Gojek and Tokopedia platforms as economy reopens

  • Amid macroeconomic challenges, financial health of the Indonesian consumer remains resilient — 92% reported either no change or an increase in income in 2022 compared to 2021
  • Other post-pandemic behavior that has become entrenched include cashless transactions, with 83% of respondents transacting with GoPay

Jakarta, Indonesia, 05 July 2023 — As economies reopened and offline activity resumed, Indonesian consumer spending for on-demand services and online shopping remained steady or increased, signaling a behavioral shift from pre-pandemic times, according to the findings of a survey by the Institute for Economic and Social Research, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia ("LPEM FEB UI").

The survey of 500 consumers using Gojek, Tokopedia, or both platforms found that the majority of Gojek consumers (57.6%) and the majority of Tokopedia consumers (85.67%) report that their use of GoTo ecosystem services was at the same level or slightly higher than the previous year. It also revealed that despite macroeconomic headwinds buffeting global markets including Indonesia in the past year, the Indonesian consumer has remained relatively resilient, with 92% of respondents reporting either no change or an increase in income compared to the year before.

“These findings are significant as GoTo is the largest digital ecosystem in Indonesia accounting for up to 2.2% of the country’s GDP. Data on the spending habits of consumers in its ecosystem may be indicative of the average Indonesian consumer in general, providing a barometer of consumption patterns pre and post-pandemic, as well as helping identify future trends for the industry as Indonesia’s digital economy continues to evolve,” said Chaikal Nuryakin, Ph.D., Head of LPEM FEB UI.

Chaikal added, “Having adopted and grown accustomed to the convenience of on-demand services such as ride-hailing, food delivery and e-commerce during the pandemic, it is not surprising that consumers have chosen to stick with what is now familiar to them even after physical stores reopen and dining out resumes. As the largest tech company in Indonesia, GoTo will remain an integral part of people’s lives and continue growing, as long as it keeps innovating to serve its customers.”

Online shopping appears to be here to stay as part of the everyday life of the Indonesian consumer, as the survey findings reveal that 92.8% of respondents use Tokopedia to purchase daily necessities. They also use the platform to purchase electricity tokens and data packages (63.9%) and to pay bills (59.7%).

The results of the survey are consistent with metrics posted by GoTo over the past year. In the fourth quarter of 2022, based on the company’s financial report, GoTo continued to record positive growth, where the number of high-quality, profitable users grew by 19% compared to the same period the previous year, and contributed to more than 60% of the total gross transaction value (GTV) recorded by the Company. Average consumer spending in GoTo’s ecosystem also grew by 24% compared to the previous year, reaching a record high IDR 9.6 million per consumer in 2022.

The findings follow an earlier study by LPEM FEB UI on the impact of the presence of the GoTo ecosystem on the national economy. In the research published in March 2023, LPEM FEB UI estimated that the GoTo Group provided an added value of IDR 349-428 trillion to the national economy, equivalent to 1.8-2.2% of Indonesia's gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022. This value comes from the added value generated from the activities of companies and partners in their ecosystem, namely driver partners and MSMEs.
